Committed... For Now.

January 23, 2009

There is a bi product of convenience. It is apathy.

When I feel that I have what I want, whenever I want it, at little personal expense I lose interest. It happened in High School and college when I dated. It happens in my job. The less pain in obtaining something the less value it holds.

I was thinking about what David said about an offering which didn’t cost him anything. He wasn’t willing to offer it. I believe that I have tracked down the source of a new student apathy. Their faith costs them nothing.

Whenever i tell old sports stories, which I am pretty sure are a bit embelished, I tell about the hard practices, the sacrificial hours and the injuries. Along the way, there are a few great moments when it seems easy, but those are valuable because of blood spilled on the field or floor. (I take this moment to recall a game against GRSBM in 1994 when I put up 24 points in the first half.)

Here at CRF we have witnessed the redefining of an important word. The word is priority. The new definition is selfish. It states that I will make this thing, this commitment my number 1 priority as long as something a bit more shiny doesn’t come my way. Then I will of course be compelled to chase it. I am committed to my church until it requires that I have to overlook the imperfections of the people around me. I am committed to serve God but only if my sports schedule permits. I’ll go on a diet as long as Applebees doesn’t have a great dinner special.

In the void of spiritual commitment, coaches, sports and leisure have booked every spare minute. In our small community it is common to hold practice on both Saturday and Sunday. It is sickness that fills our lack of value. I have given up on parents screaming out, “This is madness! You cannot have my child another minute!”

I am counting on this generation of sick and apathetic kids to realize that their lives have been robbed of a valuable word. Struggle.

I committed to be home after I wrote this blog but ESPN’s Top Plays is on. Dawn will understand.
